Overview
A unique drawing illustrated by Creative Japanese Calligraphy Artist Kōji Takano.
This artwork was drawn in WActivity JAPAN live session on YouTube.
Description
The concept word of this artwork is「破」. It reads “ha” and in some form of theater such as gagaku and noh it refers to the middle section of a song.
In fact, it is the middle one of the three kanji that make up the word「守破離」“Shuhari”:
「守」“mamoru”, “protect”, “defend”;「破」“ha”, “demolish”, “break”;「離」“ri”, “distance”.
The concept of “Shuhari”, “Three Stages of Mastery”, can be expressed as follows.
First of all, observe what the master teaches you. Following his lead, you “defend” the “fundamentals” the master passes on to you.
Then, after having assimilated them, you have to “demolish” these teachings. “Breake with tradition”.
This is the only way possible to take “distance” from what you have been taught and “create your own style”.
